The Truth About Guns

"Introduced in 2006, the PF-9 is a semi-automatic, double-action-only, locked-breech pistol chambered in that archetype of ubiquity, the 9mm Luger (or 9mm Parabellum, or 9 X 19, etc.). Quickly and dirtily: it's a larger and more feature-laden version of the P3AT chambered in a more powerful caliber. ('More feature-laden" here means that it has a slide stop, an accessory rail, and usable sights.) You may be familiar with Kel-Tec's other small nine, the P11. Imagine a lighter, more up-to-date P-11 with a thinner grip due to a single-stack magazine and bingo! You've got the 12.7-ounce, 0.88-inch-thick Kel-Tec PF-by-God-9."

"According to a knowledgeable PF-9 owner, two weak points in the PF-9 design are the plastic magazine release and the magazine follower. The mag release may wear out quickly unless care is taken to hold in the mag release button while inserting the mag. Mag followers may wear on the front left corner if you allow the slide to lock back on an empty mag very often. The negative effect of that is that your pistol will not lock back the slide consistently after the last round in the mag is fired."

"The PF-9 feels good in my hand, whereas the P-11 does not. That is the bottom line. It took me a while to get where I could hit reliably with the gun. You have to exercise a certain amount of trigger control to be accurate with it--pull the trigger back and hesitate slightly, steady your aim, then fire. But I recently took the gun out after a long interval of shooting other guns, and was fairly amazed that at 8 yards I was able to produce a group smaller than my fist."

"The PF-9 shoots like it looks. It's all business. Lacking one of those "new-fangled" external safeties, the PF-9 has a really, really long trigger pull. I am sure it's bad self-defense shooting form, but at the range I pre-loaded tension on the trigger before firing the gun. Tutorial: pull the trigger back about two-thirds, feel the trigger start to catch, and then slowly pull the trigger the rest of the way."

"Shooting the PF-9 proved to be a pleasure. Despite its light weight, the felt recoil was less than an Airweight .38 Special shooting Plus P ammunition in both guns. The video shows the muzzle rise and controllability of the PF-9. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease at which the PF-9 could be quickly fired for repeat shots. I fired the Kel-Tec with several different brands and types of high performance ammunition, all of which is suitable for social work. The accuracy of all ammo tested was acceptable, and reliability was perfect with all ammunition tried."

"One thing I am not in love with about this pistol are the sights. They are fixed ramp front and windage-adjustable rear, both with white dots. I would prefer Tritium sights, especially on the front, to help at night and in low light. I did put a Crimson Tract LG-435 laser sight on the pistol and I have come to treasure it so much that I put laser sights on my other self-defense gun (a .45 caliber 4" XD-45)."
